All 50 U.S. state capitals are listed alphabetically below with each being the center of government for its particular state. Some capitals are large cities with Phoenix, Arizona being the largest with 1,445,632 people, and some capitals are smaller towns with Montpelier, Vermont being the smallest with only 7,855 residents.

Most states have changed their capital at least once. The year the current capital was established is listed, and it's almost never the same year the state became a state. The thirteen original states became states when the United States Constitution was ratified.
