How Long is Cosmetology School in Michigan?

The short answer is 1,500 hours. We can’t speak for any other institution, but at Douglas J Aveda Institutes in Michigan, you can complete our cosmetology program in as little as 11 months during our daytime program, and as little as 14 months in our evening program at any of our four campuses:

Now, you might be wondering why the requirement is set at 1,500 hours. The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs oversees the licensure of Michigan cosmetologists, ensuring that professionals meet certain standards to protect both clients and practitioners. After careful consideration, it was determined that 1,500 hours provides aspiring cosmetologists with the necessary time to complete a thorough education in both practical and theoretical skills.

What can you expect to learn during your time in cosmetology school? Our curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • Haircutting
  • Hair coloring
  • Manicuring
  • Safety protocols
  • Sanitation practices
  • Anatomy
  • Physiology

What is your most memorable moment?
When I was an apprentice at the Okemos salon, TJ Weaver, the founder’s son, asked me what I wanted to do with my career. I said I wanted to run the salon and I needed him to tell me how to get there. His answer was, work hard, put myself in a position to be noticed and take every opportunity that comes across my path, no matter how intimidating.

- Sarah Heath, Salon Director and Douglas J Aveda Institute Graduate
